| | Pentecost: The Power of the Holy Spirit
“When the day of Pentecost had come, [the Apostles] were all together in one place.” What is Pentecost, we ask? Pentecost is a Greek word for 50. It was used by Jews living in Alexandria in the first century to denote the feast of harvest because it occurred fifty days after the festivity recalling the Passover. The feast of harvest was commanded by God...

| | Has Science Discovered God?
A DVD produced by the Institute for Metaphysics in 2004 would interest not only Christians, but also Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, and every other people of religion. It would also interest Atheists and Agnostics who do not believe in any god. Why? Because the main contributor is the best known atheist in the 20th century: Professor Antony Flew. He is joined by two world... |

| | Jesus meets the Samaritan Woman (John 4)
Jesus “had to pass through Samaria.” Of course, he did not have to pass through Samaria. The Jews had a shorter route to avoid passing through Samaria since the Samaritans were considered worse than gentiles. Since the Babylonian exile this group of Israelites mixed with non Israelites and so were influenced by the introduction of Babylonian gods in... |

| | Jesus heals the man born blind!
This is the sixth sign (miracle) that John alone narrates in his Gospel. The first was Jesus’ sign in Cana where he changed water into wine; the second was his healing of the official’s son at a distance; the third was his healing of the paralytic at the pool; the fourth was the multiplication of food; the fifth was Jesus’ walking on water. And of course, the seventh...

| | Mary Magdalene and the Risen Christ
From John 20 [Now on the first day of the week Mary Mag'dalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.
So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him." ... |

| | [On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. 13 The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so... |

The Catholic Encyclopaedia has an entry on Apocalypse (Revelation). Here is an excerpt that outlines the contents of Revelation for those who have not read it before. I have followed it with excerpts on the purpose (why it was written) and an interpretation which the Biblical scholars provided in the Encyclopaedia. Contemporary Biblical scholars whom I quoted in the lecture tended to... |

| | Why I believe in the God of Christianity. Not because he is almighty..not because he is all-just..not because he has all the power.... It is because he is LOVE... He loves and his love is eternal and unlimited. We know from faith that God is one and Trinity or three in one. This is the central dogma of Christianity. God is not a solitary person who loves himself selfishly. God the...

| | So how do we interpret the Bible?
First, the teaching of the Church:
The Second Vatican Council indicates three criteria (Cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) 112-114)
Be especially attentive to the content and unity of the whole Scripture (this means that the interpretation of one part must be in accord with the rest of the Bible whose centre and goal is Jesus Christ)... |

| | True Love and Premarital Sex
What is true love based on?
It is based on human dignity.
And our dignity stems from 2 facts:
God created every creature out of love. We are the fruit of his love.
God made humans even in his image and likeness..The basis of our dignity is that image which made us surpass all other creatures. He made us in his image because he wants to dwell... |

| | Mini lecture Dec. 7 2007
We spoke earlier about why we believe in the God of Christianity. We learned that our faith teaches us about a God who is so close to his creation. He created out of love. And by his love he sustains creation in existence. Modern cosmology suggests that creation started with a "Big Bang" according to the theory. The cosmos came out of nothing. And we can... |

| | Pope Benedict XVI - Homily at the Mass at Altoetting in Germany, Sep. 11, 2006.
Dear Brothers and Sisters!
In today's First Reading, Responsorial Psalm and Gospel, three times and in three different ways, we see Mary, the Mother of the Lord, as a woman of prayer. In the Book of Acts we find her in the midst of the community of the apostles gathered in the Upper Room, praying that the Lord, now... |

|
| | Very simply, contemporary scientific research in cosmology found that:
- The universe was not there from eternity but has a beginning (which we call the Big Bang)
- The universe was so fine-tuned that any slight change in its initial conditions or the constants in physical laws would have... |

| | No one denies historical tragedies that Christians contributed to. However, Christianity undeniably made a huge positive difference in the history of humanity.
A unique contribution that Christianity made to mankind is its belief of the intrinsic worth of each individual person as a child of God. Here we will briefly scan the influence of Christianity on the development of civilization. 1. ... |

| | When Christianity spread to the wider world – Hellenistic Jews and Gentiles - it encountered a very different mentality from that of Jewish Palestine. Some of the people who became Christian were uncomfortable with the notion of a tangible God - a God who acts in history and who came among us as a human being - and would have preferred that the Christian story expressed itself in the realm of timeless... |

| | The First Council of Nicaea (325 AD) did not deal with or make decisions on the Gospels, but was preoccupied with assessing the false teaching of Arius (a priest of Alexandria who in 318 spread the idea that Christ is not equal to God the Father but a subordinate ‘god’ created at the beginning of time). At the First Council of Nicaea (325 AD), the bishops of the entire Church rejected Arius’ teaching... |

| | Christians believed Jesus was truly the Son of God since the beginning, long before the Emperor Constantine ruled the Roman Empire in the 4th century. Here is some evidence:
- The 4 Gospels present and reflect the belief of the very early Christian communities that Jesus was divine. By the beginning of the 2nd Century, the 4 canonical Gospels were already in place (See next question).

| | 1. Connecting with God at Mass: The Eucharist (Mass) is the prayer of the Church par excellence since it includes Christ himself praying for us in his sacrifice. We should participate actively in Mass all the time. God is especially present there for the Eucharist is the body and blood of Christ himself under the form of bread and wine.
2. How to connect with God elsewhere: We should also realize...

| | Hello people,
My name is Claudio de Sa, 29 years old, and I live in Brazil. I'm Catholic Apostolic Roman.
The Eastern Catholic Church has fascinated me from some months to today, and in an internet search I found this site.
I am still reading about your community, and learning about the Eastern Rite. I see specially beautiful in the Sacrad Icons.

| | Hello Kody, Music is beautiful indeed.
Unfortunately, I don't know of any site that contains the lyrics and the translation from Arabic to English. The Chants are prayers, and I am sure that prayers can be found in any language. If you know of an arabic priest in Brazil, he might be able to help you out after listening to the chants.
I do apologize, but this will be posted... |
